When fashion goes green

Bryant Park has become the beacon of what New York fashion stands for an industry that’s fearless, tireless and always moving forward.”

That’s what Anna Wintour has to say about the surprising and headlining news that New York Fashion Week will be moving out of its iconic tents in the park after this season.

A less talked-about, but equally, if not more important, development is that the Mercedes-Benz- presented event promised to be carbon neutral for the first time. Its official natural beverage provider, ONE. Natural Experience served water in Tetra Pak cartons. containers made of paper, a recyclable material.

Tetra Pak also went one step further. The carton packaging manufacturer bought carbon offsets to compensate for the fuel and energy used in the shows.

According to The CarbonNeutral Company which determined the carbon footprint of the event, that’s 948 tons of carbon dioxide emission. We are delighted and proud to work with Tetra Pak and O.N.E. said IMG Fashion senior vice president Fern Mallis, organizer of the fashion week.

The offsets were purchased from a forestry project in California and two sustainable dairy farms in Idaho.

Designers also did their part in promoting the green chic style. In another fashion week called The Green5hows Eco Fashion Week, more ecologically conscious designs were displayed over at East 11th Street in Manhattan.

Gary Harvey made use of recycled laundry bags and newspaper pages while Samantha Pleet incorporated a few yards of organic cotton into her dresses. House of Organic/Ecovaruhuset. a group of eco-friendly designers, introduced experimental fibrous materials.
